Silver plus
Encyclopedia
Silver plus is a 2-seater, step-through motorbike that was introduced by Royal Enfield Motors
in India in 1980s. It was one of the first geared step-through bikes in India. It was launched along with Explorer, another mini bike, a two seater that featured the same engine. While Silver Plus featured a hand operated cable link gear shifts, Explorer used a foot-operated gear shift. Silver Plus and Explorer offered a few firsts at that time. Magnesium alloy wheels and geared 2-stroke engine in the "less than 100cc" category.
Engine,Transmission and Performance
Silver Plus was powered by a 2-stroke, 65CC air-cooled, carburetor engine, manufactured with technical assistance from Zundapp. The transmission supported two gears and the gears are operated by hand, much like the Italian Scooters. Later the transmission was upgraded to a 3 gear model. The engine was known for its work horse capabilities.
Performance was never a forte of Silver Plus. Initial models, which featured the 2 gear transmission were often criticized for the lack of outright performance and in-city driving. Royal Enfield addressed the performance issue by upgrading the gears to 3. The upgrade ensured Silver Plus to gain a moderate success and sold decently in South India.
Due to lack of refinement and service issues Silver Plus lost its market share to its competition. Bajaj M80, Kinetic Engineering's Luna Magnum and TVS Motors's TVS 50 XL & Champ, gained the market then. Royal Enfield stopped the production later and switched its complete focus to their core brand - Bullet motorcycles.
