History

It took three attempts to provide Sidmouth

 with a railway line, the first line opened in 1836 to serve a proposed dock project, the second received parliamentary authorisation in 1862 but the company building the line failed before the line was completed, and it was not until 6 July 1864 that the line was finally opened. A major reduction is the services along the line in the 1960s lead to a corresponding decrease in usage. The line closed to passenger traffic on 6 March 1967 and to freight on 8 May that year.
