Shyamal Mitra was one of the best known singers of Bengal
in the 1950s to 70s. Along with Hemanta Mukherjee and Manna Dey
he was the most notable singer of that period. With a good baritone his voice reflected a range of emotions. Besides he also had fair amount of success as a music director.
He also sang in the famous Mahisasura Mardini
program.

. In 1948 he had differences with his father regarding music and came to Kolkata in search of a career. He started residing in a mess and had his training under erstwhile singer Sudhirlal Chakraborty.
He made his first attempt as a music director on the film called Jai Maa Kali Boarding in the year 1953. The total numbers of music compositions done by him was forty six. Shyamal Mitra had released his first record called Shon shon ogo and Bandhu go jani in 1951. He died on 15 November 1987.
