Shusha was occupied by Armenian armed forces on May 8, 1992 during the Nagorno-Karabakh War

 and the building of the theatre was destroyed. Because of the occupation, the theatre had to move from Shusha and is now located in Sumgayit. It is funded by [{Azersun Holding]] mostly performing at its cultural centre. The director of the theatre is Agalar Mehdiyev. The theatre staff also travels and performs in many regions of Azerbaijan.
