Overview

The work adds mystery novel elements to the Magical Girl genre. Many severe scenes are depicted, such as the means by which Risuka transform. In fight scenes, the focus is more on how Risuka can use her magic cleverly to defeat the enemy, rather than just defeating foes with strong magic.

There are quotes from H.P. Lovecraft's works at the beginning of the books, and terminology from Lovecraft's "Cthulhu" can be found throughout.

World view

The setting takes place mainly in Kyuushuu, Saga prefecture.Access to Nagasaki prefecture, the Land of Magic, is blocked by a massive gate. Movement across the border to Nagasaki prefecture is managed by the Gate Management Committee.

Nagasaki Prefecture is home to those known as Mages , who make use of a special power called "Magic". It is said that magic is "the act of radiating the user's 'spirit' outside of themselves", and that one can learn what kind of person a user is by the magic they use. Humans bestowed with magic by a "Mages" are depicted as "mages".

There are two technologies, Magic Formulas and Magic Squares, which assist in the invocation of Magic. Using the Magic formula technology, the user can shorten the time needed for enchantment by writing a formula on the target of the spell. The user must be close to the target in order to invoke the spell. Magic squares are a "square" which invokes the spell when a specified condition is cleared.Unlike magic formulas, the user doesn't have to be close by.

Synopsis

Mizukura Risuka the mage, and Kugi Kizutaka the Mage-user are on a "magic hunt" throughout Saga Prefecture in order to find Risuka's father Mizukura Shingo.

The two of them gradually close in on Mizukura Shingo through many encounters and battles with other mages.

.Risuka is a 5th grader, and while she is on the elementary school register, she barely attends school, instead spends her time at home transcribing magic tomes. Her "type" is cool guys (sumo-wrestler build). Her hobby is spectating sumo wrestling. She transferred into a school in Saga prefecture to search for her father.She had been "magic hunting" alone since 2 years ago, but almost 1 year ago she met Kizutaka and has been working together with him since then. She grew up in a fictional city of Nagasaki Prefecture, but because she only recently learned Japanese, she has a unique way of talking that Kizutaka calls "like badly translated German" where she reverses the subject and predicate [YYYY, the XXXX is.] (for example: "Not kind to me, that Kizutaka is."). All types of magical formula have been bound to Risuka's blood by Mizukura Shingo, allowing her to perform most kinds of magic just through her own bloodshed.

Her element (pattern) is "water" , her type (category) is "Time" , and her manifestation (moment) is "manipulation". She is able to omit the time it takes for wounds to fully heal, or the time it takes her to move to a targeted coordinate by consuming her own lifespan. She is able to temporarily age 17 years and become her 27 year old self for 1 minute when she looses an almost fatal amount of blood.Every time Risuka becomes this 17 year older version of herself, she has a slightly different personality - but they all share an aggressive disposition. She is also a powerful user of time magic, apparently requiring little effort to do so, which present Risuka is unable to achieve yet.

Kugi Kizutaka (供犠創貴) "mage-user"

A 5th grader living in Saga Prefecture.While he is a model student who serves as class representative every term, he looks down upon all other people than himself. When visiting Risuka's household due to her truancy, Kizutaka sensed that she wasn't normal. Since then, he has kept close ties with her, seeing her as an important "pawn". Kizutaka's dream is to make all people happy, and he will sacrifice anything it takes to realise it. While rebellious towards his father, he acknowledges that he can't win and respects his father.

Tsunagi / Tsunagiba Itachi (ツナギ/ 繋場いたち)

A girl who was turned into a mage by Mizukura Shingo, she was originally a human.Has apparently lived for over 2000 years. After fighting Risuka & co., she transfers to their elementary school under the name "Tsunagiba Itachi" in order to "observe" them. She is the founder of the Gate Management Committee, but doesn't take a prominent status, and works as leader of an isolated frontline unit. She is chasing Mizukura Shingo in order to make him kill her. Thanks to having lived for over 2000 years, she is highly experienced and is a reliable comrade. However, her weakness is that she is bad at dealing with unfavourable circumstances.

Her element is "meat" and her type is "decomposition". She has 512 mouths on her body, and anyone eaten by them has their magical powers decomposed and absorbed from them.

Mizukura Shingo (水倉神檎) "Nyarutoteppu"

Risuka's father - presently missing.He did have 666 titles, but because he gave one, "The read witch of time", to Risuka, he now only has 665.He is apparently plotting an "ark" project, in order to allow Mages, who can't cross the sea, to do so.

Kugi Kizutsugu (供犠創嗣)

Kizutaka's father.A police detective from Saga Prefecture who no member of the Japanese police is able to oppose. Popular with women. He has repeated a process of marriage and divorce, and is presently living separately from his 6th wife. Wears a bright white suit. He has a sweet tooth, and likes both sweet things and curry. He doesn't have a very close relationship with Kizutaka.He is actually quite fond of Risuka.
