Brief Description of Sherpur town

Sherpur (Town) stands on the bank of the Mrigi. It was established in the seventeenth century. It consists of 9 wards and 56 mahallas. The area of the town is 23.39 sq km. The town has a population of 78749; male 52.22%, female 47.78%; density of population is 3367 per sq km. Literacy rate among the people is 58.4%. During the Mughal period Regional Administrative Centre was established in the town. Magistrate Court and Thana (Police Station) were established in the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Sherpur Municipality was established in 1869. The Telegraph Office and the Munsif Court were established in 1885 and 1887 respectively. Queen Victoria Memorial Academy, now well-known as Sherpur Government Victoria Academy, was established in 1887 and Govinda Kumar Peace Memorial Institute was established in 1919.Sherpur Shahid Moktijoddha stadium established in 1997.

Geography

Sherpur Sadar is located at 25.0000°N 90.0167°E . It has 80091 units of house hold and total area 360.01 km². Sherpur Sadar Upazila (sherpur district) with an area of 360.01 sq km, is bounded by sreebardi, jhenaigati and nalitabari upazilas on the north, jamalpur sadar upazila on the south, nakla upazila on the east and islampur and melandaha upazilas on the west. Main rivers are Old Brahmaputra, Mrigi and Dashani; noted hill Kodaljhara; Aurabaura, Nishla, Dhala, Isli, Mausi are noted Beels. Sherpur (Town) stands on the bank of the Mrigi.

This business is also established here. If local businessman get some business facility then this can be a good export item. Not only this, Sherpur has a land-port at Nalitabari.Nowadays, hundreds of students are studying in different universities and colleges. Also, a large number of students are studying in different countries in the world.
