is the youngest daughter of the late President of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
.
Rehana was visiting Germany with her sister Sheikh Hasina
on August 15, 1975, and therefore survived the killing
of most of her family and of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman
in an army coup. She later went to the United Kingdom
, where she was granted political asylum.
In 2007-08, while Sheikh Hasina was imprisoned under the emergency rule of Fakhruddin Ahmed
's caretaker government
, Rehana organized the Awami League secretly on Hasina's behalf. The Awami League won the 2008 election, appointing Sheikh Hasina
