In response to citizen complaints and the alleged illegality of Virginia gaming laws Sharon Bulova replied, "The idea of raffling off weapons in a public space or elsewhere makes me feel a little queasy, and if indeed this turns out to be not legally permissible, then I am happy to hear that."
In the summer of 2007, grass was growing tall around several highway medians in Fairfax County because the Virginia Department of Transportation was not maintaining the right-of-way, including mowing the lawn frequently enough. So Bulova partnered with Lt. Jim Carroll of the Fairfax Sheriff's department to get inmates to start mowing the lawn.
Regarding development in Tysons Corner, sometimes known as Fairfax County's downtown , Sharon Bulova has voted against certain projects. In 1994 she voted against the construction of Gannett's (owner of USAToday among other papers) headquarters in Tysons Corner because of opposition from NIMBYs. However, Bulova has not been completely opposed to growth; after Federal approval of the Silver Line
project, she announced that since "Some of the property owners may be ready to build, we should work with them now." Since zoning documents have not been upgraded for denser transit oriented growth developers, who want to take advantage of Metro's four new stops, Tysons will have to temporarily seek special permission to build at higher densities. Sharon Bulova has also recently been pushing for expanded rail to Dulles Airport.
's election to the U.S. House of Representatives, Bulova entered the race to replace Connolly in a special election. On January 25, 2009, the Washington Post endorsed Bulova. She went on to win by 1%.
