He has been playing international matches representing India since the year 1997 in various age group (Under-19,Under -23 and Senior Team). He is one of the best midfield players in India. Venkatesh first started playing with his brother Dakshina Murthy for ADE ( Aeronautical Development Establishment). Initially he learned many aspects from his brother. When Venkatesh played for ITI ( Indian Telephone Industries) then veteran coach Krishnaji Rao who found and coached him. Venkatesh named as the "Player of the year"(2004–05) by the All India Football Federation. He is the first Bangalore player to get this award.

Venkatesh is running an academy called " "Venkatesh Youth FootBall Academy" in Bangalore, at present giving training for 50 youth under the age group of Under-12 and Under-14 coached by his brother Dakshina Murhty.

Currently he is playing for the Pune FC
