Keough drew criticism by telling his mom he wanted to "hit her in the head with a baseball bat" when she traveled 2,000 miles to watch him play in the Chicago area. His mother later apologized for her son, adding that Shane was unhappy with the "editing process."

Keough was drafted in the 36th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft by the Oakland A's as a draft-and-follow pick. Keough attended Yavapai College
