In April 2011 Jeffery made a controversial ruling in the final minutes of the match between St Kilda and Richmond

handballed through the goal posts for a rushed behind. Jeffery ruled that McGuane was too far from the goal to legally do so and awarded a free kick to St Kilda, from which forward Nick Reiwoldt goaled. This decision was made in spite of the fact that there is no stipulation in the rules of distance from the goal to permit a rushed behind.

The AFL later admitted that Jeffery's decision was incorrect.
