Willard A. Palmer wrote, "The schleifer is a "sliding" ornament, usually used to fill in the gap between a note and the previous one."

Another connotation for the term 'schleifer' is a German late-medieval dance form in 3/4 metre. It is seen by some musicologists as one of the predecessors of the waltz.
