It grows to a maximum total length of about 35 mm. Mature males are iridescent silvery-blue with red snout and red lobes to the caudal fin; females and immature males are grayish with a black pigmentation spot by the anus. The Sawbwa barb completely lacks scales. It is an active, peaceful, schooling, plankton-eater.
