Sattur is located at 9.37°N 77.93°E. It has an average elevation of 56 metres (183 feet). Sattur is located between two rivers Vaippar and Uppodai.

Shiva and Vishnu temples in Sattur find histiorical mention. Around Sattur, Irukangudi and Oodaipatti have temples of Mariamman and Vinayagar respectively. The town has very old Masjid and Eid-Ka Ground (Kattu Pallivasal)which has historical values where Muslims do their festival prayers.

A type of chillies grown in Sattur called Sattur Sanam s4 is one of two chilly varieties produced in Tamil Nadu. The Ramnad Mundu, a type of light bathe towel, is produced here.

Places of interest

Irrukaangundi Marriamman Temple (Pilgrim Center) near Sattur (8 KM) attracts lot of devotees from various towns in and around VNR District.Age old Siva Temple (>900 yrs) is another place to visit.Satturappan - Perumal Kovil's Aadi Car Festival , Alaggar Aatrru vaibavam are famous of this location. Most of the Shops in Main Bazzar belongs to this temple.Park and River Bed is good places for relaxation.

Cultural Centre of Virudunagar District

Sattur is the cultural centre of Virudhunagar District. Apart from the temple of famous goddess "Irukaangudi lallu" and its old heritage, there is a little know but historically important place. That place is a small rest house-cum-mosque, which is located on southwest boundary of the city on the highway lane. This mosque is believed to be built my famous mogul ruler Akbar, during his journey to Southern part of Tamil Nadu.

Sattur has one more identity. That is the native village slang of Madurai Tamil. Nothing is beautiful like village/country side slang in any languages. Most of the people of Sattur are visibly rough but by heart, they are very friendly and helpful.

Sattur along with its neighbour town Kovilpatti is also well known for its astrologers.
In Sattur, One can find both hereditary astrologers and Astrologers with formal astrology education.
Sattur is a riverside town, a typical example for "Marudham" land type as classified in Sangam literatures.
People in and around Sattur are basically agarian society and thus there is strong belief over all religious myths among its people.
