The New English School Trust (NEST), Vasad constituted the Board of Management of SVIT under the chairmanship of an able and experienced educationist and administrator of Gujarat, Prof. Shantibhai M Amin. This Board was established in 1997 as a national-level institute in the fields of Engineering and Technology as per the guidelines of AICTE at Vasad.

Though SVIT is approved by the AICTE, the website of AICTE mentions only three of its courses as approved by it, namely Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering. From 2004 to 2005 all courses Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering,Civil Engineering,Computer Engineering,Information Technology, Electronics & Comm Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engg, Aeronautical Engineering, and Mca were approved by AICTE.

Foundation

Professor Shantibhai Amin and Shiva Kaka, classmates at the College of Engineering, Pune along with Chandubhai Patel, a leading businessman in town decided to establish SVIT with the help of local people. . The college was built with Gandhian philosophy.

The main role was played by Chandubhai Patel. He played a big part in bringing the people together who could make this institution possible. He has put in more effort in making this happen for the future of this town. Ramanbhai Patel (Raman kaka) contributed Rs. 1.5 crore — the biggest donation the institution has received. He has always been a generous donor when it comes to welfare of the town.

Initially the college land was waste land purchased by the government. It was a ruinous area then it was processed and prepared for the construction of the building. SVIT was initially started with Civil, Mechanical and Electrical branch with the intake of 40 students.

SVIT houses an Aeronautical Engineering division as well, the only one in the State of Gujarat, with an intake of 60 students.

Infrastructure

SVIT comprises 26 acres (105,218.4 m²) of land on which the institute buildings are constructed with the plinth area of 232608 (Carpet area 193840) sq ft. Sufficient land is available for further development. Playgrounds for outdoor and indoor games facilities have been developed. Land for 25 feet (7.6 m)-wide approach road, joining the national highway to the institute, has been purchased and developed by the management. SVIT has many other facilities like Administration (G.F-ADM & Drawing Hall, F.F-Library, S.F-Ament. & Drawing Hall), Cafeteria, Remote Sensing (Civil Dept.), Power Sub Station, Stationery Shop, Transport Cell, Pump Room, Coffee Shop.

Faculty achievement

Assistant professor N.G Chitaliya present a paper on "An Efficient Method for Face Feature Extraction and Recognition Cased on Contourlet Transform and Principal Component Analysis using Neural Network" published in International Journal of Computer Applications in September 2010.

Education environment

A diverse and well-qualified faculty drawn academic institutions and industrial houses of high repute, many of the teaching staff are Ph.D and post graduates from reputed institutions including the IITs.

It has the engineering branches. It also has Architecture as a branch, which is being run with the name of College of Architecture.

A CNC lathe machine and EDM are present in the workshop. Software like Pro/E & ANSYS are used in aiding students of the Mechanical Engineering department. FFT Analyser is in Aeronautical Engineering Department. Software like MATLAB, TINAPRO, Embedded System, Mobile Communication and Energy Audit instruments are in the E&C Department. PSCAD and ETAP software and a full fledged high voltage laboratory in the Electrical Engineering department. STADD-PRO software, Image processing Software and Photogrammetric Instrument (PG-3) are available for analyzing aerial photographs in the Civil Engineering Department. People

SVIT has 2,480 undergraduate students, 180 graduate students, almost 150 full-time faculty, and 10 part-time faculty. The male-to-female student ratio is close to 2:1. Fees use to change yearly by order of State Fee Committee, which is likely to be revised from the current academic year 2007–2008.

SVIT follows rules of Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (Technical) for admission procedures. Students, who have cleared 10+2 (Science) or diploma can apply to SVIT. Students should apply to Joint Admission Committee for Professional Courses (Technical).

Central Committee

Central Committee is led by General Secretory of SVIT. Central Committee is a body of elected students. It is responsible from many major events like annual day, sports week, welcome and farewell party, and many more.

Every year SVIT in association with ISTE organize PRAKARSH - A national level technical symposium. Participants from colleges in India come and take part in technical and non-technical events. In 2011 more than 5000 participants took part in more than 45 events.

SVIT Alumni Association is a group of students, who are passed out from SVIT. This association is very vital to bring alumni together. Gaurang Shukla is the former secretary of Alumni Association.
