Club career

Hutchinson joined the Chelsea youth academy at age nine and progressed into a third-year scholar and the reserve team captain. He turned professional in August 2006. Also able to play at centre-back, Hutchinson was the second highest appearance maker in the Chelsea youth team one season.

Hutchinson endured an injury fiesta during much of the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons but was nonetheless tipped to be a future first team player by former manager José Mourinho

On 20 August 2007, Hutchinson signed a new four-year contract, keeping him at Stamford Bridge

 until 2011. After just five reserve games in the 2007–08 season, an injury brought his season to a halt. Further recovery time was needed in the middle of that season, limiting him to just six league games.

Retirement

 injury which happened during the three seasons, Hutchinson decided to retire from football in August 2010 aged 21. In total in his career he made one starting appearance for Chelsea and three appearances as a substitute.

After retirement Hutchinson will work at the club's academy while also studying sports science at university. He will later pursue coaching qualifications.

Chelsea Comeback

On 16 July 2011, Hutchinson came out of retirement after recovering from his knee injury and played 45 minutes for the Chelsea reserves in a 6–1 loss to Crawley Town. On 3 October 2011, he played and captained his first whole match back in the Chelsea reserves in a 1-0 loss against Aston Villa. On 1 December 2011 he was awarded a one and a half year contract with Chelsea following a "significant improvement" in his knee problem that forced him to retire.
