The newspaper traces itself to the Cattaraugus Republican, founded in 1867. It was originally published in Ellicottville, then moving to Little Valley before merging with a Salamanca newspaper to become the Salamanca Republican-Press in the 1950s, eventually dropping the "Republican" name in the 1990s.

Until January 2, 2009, the Press was the smallest daily newspaper in the United States, publishing five days a week (originally six). Bradford Publishing decided to cut back the paper to a weekly newspaper, with the last daily issue coming that day. Since January 8 of that year, the Press has been retooled into a weekly paper with a greater emphasis on local news features and local sports.
