Saccharomyces Genome Database
Encyclopedia
The Saccharomyces Genome Database is a scientific database
Biological database
Biological databases are libraries of life sciences information, collected from scientific experiments, published literature, high-throughput experiment technology, and computational analyses. They contain information from research areas including genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microarray...

 of the molecular biology
Molecular biology
Molecular biology is the branch of biology that deals with the molecular basis of biological activity. This field overlaps with other areas of biology and chemistry, particularly genetics and biochemistry...

Genetics
Genetics , a discipline of biology, is the science of genes, heredity, and variation in living organisms....

 of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a species of yeast. It is perhaps the most useful yeast, having been instrumental to baking and brewing since ancient times. It is believed that it was originally isolated from the skin of grapes...

, which is commonly known as baker's or budding yeast.

The Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD) provides Internet access to the complete Saccharomyces cerevisiae genomic DNA sequence
DNA sequence
The sequence or primary structure of a nucleic acid is the composition of atoms that make up the nucleic acid and the chemical bonds that bond those atoms. Because nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA, are unbranched polymers, this specification is equivalent to specifying the sequence of...

, its genes and their products, the phenotypes of its mutants, and the literature supporting these data. The amount of information and the number of features provided by SGD have increased greatly following the release of the S. cerevisiae genomic sequence. SGD aids researchers by providing not only basic information, but also tools such as sequence similarity searching that lead to detailed information about features of the genome and relationships between genes. SGD presents information using a variety of user-friendly, dynamically created graphical displays illustrating physical, genetic and sequence feature maps.

The biocurators
Biocurator
A biocurator is a professional scientist who collects, annotates, and validates information that is disseminated by biological and model organism databases...

at SGD annotate each gene by identifying functions from the theseprimary literature and linking to terms using the structured knowledge representation in the Gene Ontology
Gene Ontology
The Gene Ontology, or GO, is a major bioinformatics initiative to unify the representation of gene and gene product attributes across all species...

. In addition functions function identified from high throuhput experiments as well as computationally predicted function annotations are included from GO Annotation project.
