Career as player

Ilie was nicknamed "Cobra" for his cunning and goalscoring talent, and had a long career where he would play for nineteen clubs. He began his career with Electroputere Craiova, and played for FC Steaua Bucureşti and Naţional Bucureşti before short spells in Turkey and Spain. He had a spell with Kocaelispor
