SNCAC NC 211

The SNCAC NC 211 was a large four-engined aircraft for passengers and cargo. The plane was made by SNCAC so there would be a large transport plane after World War II.

Information

The SNCAC NC 211 was powered by four Gnôme-Rhone engines with 1,200 PS each. The propellers were triple bladed and had a diameter of 4 meters each. The plane was divided into two decks the first deck carried 150 cubic meters of cargo the second deck can carry 131 passengers and 7 crew.

Production

Of the fourteen planned aircraft, only four were built. It was deemed unfit for military service by the Armée de l'Air

History

in 1945, the French military wanted to create paratrooper divisions, but quickly found that they didn't have any aircraft that could be used for this purpose. So, General Juin

, the then chief of staff, ordered the Direction Technique Industrielle to evaluate the interest for this project. SNCAC and Bréguet answered positively and SNCAC was selected in December 1945. After months of prevarication, an order was set for 105 aircraft.

A first prototype was presented in Paris on November 15, 1946. However the first flight was delayed due to hydraulic problems on the landing gear.

On July 20, 1948 when the first prototype was tested, it crashed killing Bertrand and his crew.
Even though the second prototype flew on April 9, 1949 the aircraft did not enter production as SNCAC was folded into the SNCAN, which was later renamed as Nord Aviation
