History

Originally, SAP Sourcing was the product of Frictionless Commerce Incorporated. Founded in June 1998 and based on technology representing more than three years of research in the Media Lab at MIT, Frictionless Commerce developed online commerce technologies. Frictionless sold these technologies as co-branded services. The customers of Frictionless were companies that wanted to offer online commerce, but did not have the resources to build and maintain their own capabilities.

Frictionless first introduced the Frictionlesssm ValueShopper service. ValueShopper provided merchants with a forum for showcasing their value-added services, and consumers with a comparative-shopping environment. Consumers visiting a Frictionless-enabled commerce site could find, compare, and purchase any of more than three million products in 200 broad categories.

In July 2006, SAP acquired Frictionless, which at the time employed 70 people, and released the acquired technologies in a product named E-Sourcing in both “on-premise” and “on-demand” versions. In 2010, SAP renamed the product SAP Sourcing.

Competitors

According to a report from Gartner in February 2010, the key players in the sourcing market are: Ariba, BravoSolution, Emptoris, Global eProcure, SAP, and SynerTrade. Another list of 27 vendors is available from a March 2010 article by Mickey North Rizza, an analyst for AMR Research.
