History

The station originally opened in 1870 as Rugeley (Trent Valley), confusingly the same name as the station on the main Trent Valley Line

. In 1917 it was renamed Rugeley Town. The station, together with all those on the line between Walsall and Rugeley, were closed on 18 January 1965 as part of the Beeching Axe, although the line remained open as freight-only. The station closed to goods on 6 September 1965.

It re-opened in 1997, as the second stage of the reopening to passengers of the Chase Line

In Apr 2011, the area is still mechanically signalled from the BRERETON SIDINGS signal box immediately south of the station on the east side of the line - the sidings are no longer extant.

A PERTIS passenger-operated ticket machine is located at the entrance to the Walsall-bound platform.

Service frequencies vary. On Weekdays there are typically two trains per hour to Walsall

 at peak times and one train per hour during the off peak period and in the evenings. There are two trains per hour throughout the day on Saturdays with an hourly evening service. All trains operate between Birmingham New Street

Most services are operated by Class 170 diesel trains and journey times from Rugeley Town are typically 12 minutes to Cannock, 29 minutes to Walsall and 53 minutes to Birmingham New Street.
