History

In October 2008 the RIPH merged with the RSH to form the new Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH)

The institute is the amalgamation of a few societies.

The Metropolitan Association of Medical Officers of Health was an English society of metropolitan Medical Officer for Health

 established on 3 April 1856. In 1869 "Metropolitan" was dropped from the title, and in 1873 it became the Society of Medical Officers of Health, and in 1989 it became the Society of Public Health.

In 1886 the Association of Medical Men Possessing a Qualification in Sanitary Science was founded. In 1892 it became the British Institute of Public Health (BIPH), which gained royal patronage

 in 1897 and became the Royal Institute of Public Health (RIPH).

In 1903 the Institute of Hygiene was founded. In 1937, it merged with the RIPH to become the Royal Institute of Public Health & Hygiene.

In 1997 the Society of Public Health merged in, and it was renamed to Royal Institute of Public Health & Hygiene and Society of Public Health (RIPHH)
