Surname

It has been suggested that the surname Rosser was derived from the Welsh 'ap Rhosyr' (meaning man of the moors). However, the name almost certainly has the same Norman-English-Welsh origins as Prosser (see the section on the origins of this name). Although there were records of ap Rossers (son of Rosser) from 1400 onwards, the name Rosser without the prefix 'ap' was not commonly used until the 19th Century. Most of Rossers then recorded lived in the Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire industrial valleys.
