In 1969 he joined a group called Brainchild. But before that he was band leader of a group called The Ronnie Lee Thing. He had even recorded his first single when he was 14 years of age.

Cunningham was friends with LAW founding member Steve Acker and he joined LAW in 1973. He replaced Mickey Williamson and sang lead on many of their recordings.

As a musician he has played either bass guitar or organ with Bad Company

In 2002 Cunningham and members of Brainchild got together to play at a concert at the Yankee Lake Ballroom in Brookfield to raise money for an autism center.
