Roberto Goitre
Encyclopedia
Roberto Goitre was an Italian choirmaster, composer and teacher.
Upon concluding his academic studies, he dedicated himself to choral conducting and, at the beginning of the 1960s, on an invite by Marcello Abbado
, he became the conductor of the choir at the "Giuseppe Nicolini" Conservatoire in Piacenza, where he taught until the end of his life.
The musical didactics and pedagogics of Zoltán Kodály became Roberto Goitre's field of research in the 1970s and 80s, to such an extent that he spent a long period of time in Hungary for his research. He also deepened his knowledge of Italian and Hungarian tunes, which he made use of later on, in creating exercises and examples for his most famous work, the "Cantar Leggendo" teaching method (meaning "to sing whilst reading"), published in 1972 by the publishing house Suvini Zerboni
.
This method was the core of a new method for teaching music, suitable to follow a child from the first years of life. Just like when teaching a child to speak, it should help them to learn what could be described to all intents and purposes as a musical mother tongue
.
Between 1968 and 1980 Roberto Goitre applied his knowledge of musical pedagogics to the choirs he had founded: the "Piccoli Cantori" in Turin and then, the "Coro Farnesiano". After his death, the post of choirmaster of the latter choir was given to Mario Pigazzini
.
Goitre dedicated all his life to musical didactics and choral music. It was indeed he who, at the start of the 1970s, founded the magazine "La Cartellina", still today a fountain of information in the realms of choral music and musical didactics. Directed by Giovanni Acciai after Goitre's death until 2004, the current director of the magazine is Marco Boschini.
