Life and Career

Robert Monckton was the second son of William Monckton-Arundell, 2nd Viscount Galway and his wife Elizabeth Villa-Real.

In 1769 he legally changed his surname to Monckton-Arundell by Royal License after his father, under the terms of the will of his aunt, Lady Frances Arundell, inherited her estates upon her death.

Whilst serving in the House of Commons he succeeded his elder brother as the Viscount Galway

He gave up his parliamentary seat following an appointment as envoy to the Elector Palatine Charles Theodore, Elector of Bavaria

. However due to circumstances unknown the appointment fell through and in the general election of 1783 he was elected to York for which he served until 1790.

He stood unsuccessfully for the Pontefract

Viscount Galway was known in society to be estranged from his first wife and upon her death on the 19th of November 1801, he subsequently married on the 24th May 1803 Mary Bridget Milnes (d. 15 November 1835), daughter of Pemberton Milnes. There was no children from the second marriage (Mary had been married before but that also failed to produce children)

Lord Galway died on the 23 July 1810 and was succeeded as Viscount Galway
