He fought in the 2nd world war, and later received his D.D.S. In 1956 he came on as a professor at the University of Minnesota, where he stayed until his death in the summer of 2006.

Gorlin received numerous honorary degrees from prestigious universities all over the world, and is known to have worked on the discovery of a number of craniofacial disorders.
