This (along with the Richmond Raiders of the Southern Indoor Football League) is the city of Richmond's third attempt at keeping an Indoor Pro football team; the previous ones were the Speed of the Af2 and the Bandits of the AIFL.

A name-the-team contest was held on the SportsQuest webpage. Nominations continued until August 11, 2009 with the five finalist names Blitz, Rush, Rivermen, Revolution, and Reign chosen the next day. Voting continued until August 21 with the Revolution name unveiled on August 24.

It was announced by the Indoor Football League on June 23, 2010 that the Revolution had won the 2010 IFL Franchise of the Year award. In addition to this award the team also took home the League's Media Relations of the Year. Revolution QB Bryan Randall

Criswell left the team in July 2010. He announced that he was going to pursue a career in consulting. His first consulting client turned out to be the crosstown Richmond Raiders of the SIFL. Shortly thereafter, several 2010 Revolution players, including MVP Randall, signed with the Raiders.

On October 7th, 2010, the team announced their new head coach, former local standout Tony Hawkins. Hawkins is the all time leading passer in Virginia State University history.

After the 2011 season the Revolution fired their manager, and folded the team.
