Verney was the eldest son of George Verney of Compton, Warwickshire and his wife Jane Lucy, daughter of William Lucy of Charlecote. He was eleven when his father died in 1574. He entered Grey's Inn in 1582 and was J.P.

 from 1590 to 1591, during which time he became liable for a penalty of £1,000 because of the escape of an important prisoner. He was commissioner for musters by 1597. In 1601 he was elected MP for West Looe

. He was knighted in 1603 and was High Sheriff of Warwickshire again from 1604 to 1605. He may have been MP for Warwickshire again during the 1604 to 1611 parliament, and was elected MP for Warwickshire in 1614.

Verney died at the age of 66 after a short illness and was buried in the church at Compton.
