 who was first to isolate an influenza virus and first to vaccinate animals against influenza. In the 1930s, Shope, a physician at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, identified the causative agent as a virus in the 1918-19 Spanish influenza pandemic. For this and other discoveries concerning viruses he was awarded the 1957 Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award.
