The sound of the bad changes constantly, and is difficult to place in specific genre. There are elements of rock, chanson, as well as electronica, from industrial to drone. This is in part explained by the many collaborations with other artists, but also from consistent pressure with the band for change. The one constant element in the music is the predominantly dark mood.

Since Richard Ruin often uses visual mediums such as actors in their performances, the number of concerts are relatively few, but at specifically chosen and generally non-rock performance venues.
