He was born in Chicago
and died in Seattle.
In the 1924 Olympics he won a gold medal in the 4x200 m freestyle relay event. He helped the American relay team to qualify for the final where he was replaced by Johnny Weissmuller
. In the semi-finals he was part of the team which improved the world record and broke ten minute barrier.
He also participated in the 1500 metre freestyle competition
