He was educated at Llanelli
Boys Grammar Technical School, and studied Electrical Engineering
at the University of Bath
before studying journalism at City University, London
. He trained as a Newspaper
reporter on the South Wales Argus
before joining Radio West in Bristol
, and then joining the BBC
. He presented Newsbeat
on BBC Radio One and was the news presenter on the Zoe Ball
Breakfast show. He has presented programmes for BBC Radio Four and BBC Radio Five Live
and until December 2008 hosted a lunchtime phone-in programme on BBC Radio Wales
.
The BBC reportedly paid about £100,000 to him to settle an unfair dismissal
claim.
He claimed compensation after his contract was terminated by BBC Wales.
He stopped presenting the show after colleagues made bullying allegations against him, according to the Western Mail. But other sources said the complaints were not about bullying. Neither the BBC nor Evans would comment about the nature of the allegations. The editor of Radio Wales at the time, Sali Collins, later left the BBC.
It is understood Evans had recently signed a new two-year contract.
In 2005 he was involved in controversy when details of an unbroadcast confrontation with BBC Royal Correspondent Nicholas Witchell
were published in several national newspapers.
He lives in London, and now works as a freelance journalist, broadcaster and media consultant and teaches journalism at London Metropolitan University.
