In 2006 Richard Poore was awarded the Order of Australia

 (O.A.M) for service through the provision of assistance to victims in the immediate aftermath of the 12 October 2002 Bali bombings, and subsequently to the people of Bali. His wife Gilana Poore, an Australian national, was awarded the Order of Australia earlier on in the year.

The award ceremony was held in Sydney in September 2006.

Richard Poore played an integral part in the launch of the first English-speaking News channel based in the middle east. Al Jazeera English was launched on 15 November 2006, with Poore and George Georgiou in transmission, to worldwide acclaim.
