. It was originally described as Achilognathus smithii by Charles Tate Regan in 1908, and is also referred to as Rhodeus ocellatus smithii in scientific literature. It is listed as critically endangered in the IUCN Red List
.
The fish reaches a size of up to 6.5 centimetres (2.6 in), and is native to freshwater habitats with a pH
of 6.8 to 7.8, a hardness
