History
The parish originated in 1857 as St. Philomena and was located about 1/2 mile west of the current church's location. In the early 1960s, the church moved to its current location at 4300 Asbury Road and built a grade school. At that time, the parish was renamed the Church of the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus. The current church structure was built in the mid 1980s to accommodate its growing membership. Due to its location on the west end of Dubuque, the parish is one of the larger and faster-growing parishes of the Dubuque area, and it now serves over 2,000 families.
Sesquicentennial
Since 1857, Resurrection has been a visible presence in the Dubuque area. Consequently, 2007 marks the sesquicentennial year, and the parish has planned many special events throughout the year to commemorate this milestone. Among the planned events are a Valentine's dance in February, a parish mission April 28-May 2, and an enhanced annual parish festival in August. The festivities will conclude with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Jerome Hanus on Christ the King Sunday, November 25.
Involvement Opportunities
Parishioners contribute to parish life through the many committees and ministries at Resurrection. Some of the committees include the Finance & Administration Committee, Faith Formation Committee, Building and Grounds Committee, Vocations Committee, Welcome Committee, and Parish Community Life Committee. Other groups focus on service and ministry including: Befrienders Ministry, Prayer Chain, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Funeral Dinner Ministry, and Christian Experience Weekend retreat teams.
Faith Formation
Resurrection offers a variety of programs and groups intended for all ages of spiritual formation. The Religious Education and Youth Ministry departments offer programs and opportunities for children from preschool through high school. These include summer vacation bible school, religious education classes, youth ministry activities, and the youth leadership council. Resurrection also offers intergenerational and interfamily catechesis through Generations of Faith gatherings, offered throughout the year. For those who want to join the Catholic Church or simply learn more about it, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) classes are available.
Sacramental Preparation
Sacramental programs are available for baptism, first Eucharist, first reconciliation, confirmation, and matrimony. Anointing of the sick and reconciliation are celebrated regularly at communal events, and may be requested individually at any time. During 2006, long-time parishioner Greg Bahl received the sacrament of holy orders and was ordained a priest in the archdiocese of Dubuque, subsequently celebrating his first Mass (Mass of Thanksgiving) at Resurrection.
Liturgy
Many opportunities for involvement in the liturgy are available at Resurrection as well, including: extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, readers, musicians, greeters, ushers, liturgical environment, altar servers, sacristans, and serving on the Liturgy Committee.
