History

It was founded in 1744 by the bandeirante Simão da Cunha Gago and was called Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Campo Alegre da Paraíba Nova (Our Lady of the Joyful Field of New Paraíba). The Indians Puris called it Timburibá, and they were originally the first inhabitants.
