company engaged in development and commercialization of a patented and proprietary Fischer-Tropsch process
Fischer-Tropsch process
The Fischer–Tropsch process is a set of chemical reactions that convert a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons. The process, a key component of gas to liquids technology, produces a petroleum substitute, typically from coal, natural gas, or biomass for use as synthetic...

for the conversion of various feedstocks to liquids fuels and chemicals. Rentech's process involves using a molten wax slurry reactor with an iron catalyst.

In 2009 Rentech acquired SilvaGas Inc and it's biomass gasification system, which was developed in a partership between Battelle Labs and the U.S. Department of Energy as part of their Biomass Power Program. The gasifier produced synthetic gas for power production at the McNeil Power Station in Burlington, VT, from 200 dry tons per day of wood chips. Rentech plans to use the renamed Rentech-SilvaGas gasification system in stand alone power production facilities and in bio-refineries.

Rentech's Product Demonstration Unit, located in Commerce City, Colorado, is the first fully integrated synthetic fuels and chemicals facility in the United States. The PDU started up and produced its first fuel during the summer of 2008. The PDU produces approximately 10 oilbbl/d of ultra-clean diesel, aviation fuels and naphtha. It is intended to serve as a testing ground for feedstock such as natural gas, petroleum coke and biomass, and as an end-to-end demonstration center for the production process of synthetic fuels.

In June, 2008, Rentech acquired an industrial site in Adams County, MS, formerly operated by International Paper. Rentech intends to build its a large-scale commercial synthetic fuels plant utilizing the Rentech Process at the site, which is just south of the city of Natchez ("Natchez").

Rentech has also announced plans to construct a renewable fuels and power plant in Rialto, CA. The Company says that it intends to use their own biomass gasification and FT technologies at this site. The inputs will be "green waste", which is collected as part of the waste collection programs in the LA-basin..

Rentech also owns and operates Rentech Energy Midwest Corporation ("REMC"), an ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facility located in East Dubuque, Illinois. The facility produces approximately 830 tons per day of natural gas-fed ammonia nitrogen fertilizer products that is sold to the surrounding agricultural community.

In August 2011, Rentech planned a spin-off of Rentech Nitrogen Partners, L.P., the firm's nitrogen fertilizer business. The company filed on SEC to raise up to $250 million in an initial public offering.
