Bythewood graduated from the High School of Performing Arts

His stint at acting has included roles as teenager R.J. Morgan on the NBC daytime soap, Another World
from 1981 to 1983 and the part of Rickey in the feature film The Brother From Another Planet
in 1984.
In 1990, Bythewood moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in screenwriting and became one of the first members of Walt Disney's prestigious Writers Fellowship Program. From there, he was hired as a writer on the hit NBC comedy series, A Different World
. He went on to write for Fox's drama series New York Undercover
, where he was the show's supervising producer.
He is married to Gina Prince-Bythewood
, who is also a film director and writer. They met while they were staff writers on the series, "A Different World." They have two children and reside in Los Angeles.
