Red Norland is a red, early-maturing potato
Potato
The potato is a starchy, tuberous crop from the perennial Solanum tuberosum of the Solanaceae family . The word potato may refer to the plant itself as well as the edible tuber. In the region of the Andes, there are some other closely related cultivated potato species...

. Smaller tubers (B and C size) are commonly sold as “baby reds” and this variety is often served boiled or in potato salads. The progenitor variety, Norland, was released by the North Dakota Agricultural College in 1957. Since the release of Norland, other darker red skinned variants were selected, most notably Red Norland and Dark Red Norland. None of these three varieties are under plant variety protection. The darker red strains are now widely grown, and Norland is rarely grown. Norland and its selections are widely adapted, but have relatively low to intermediate yields.

The Red Norland plant is medium large with medium thick, prominently angled stems and determinate growth. It has slightly closed, medium to large leaves are medium green and have green petioles. The green, slightly swollen nodes have green internodes and waved wings. The ovate leaflets are acutely lobed and asymmetrical. Red Norland plants have purple flowers with medium to large sized yellow anthers and the flowers have abundant pollen. The tubers have an oblong, slightly flattened shape with a smooth texture and shallow eyes. They have dark red skin and white flesh, but during storage, the red color may fade. The tubers have low specific gravity, meaning that they are good for boiling, but not for processing into chips or fries or for baking.

Red Norland and its selections are tolerant to common scab and are not susceptible to internal defects. On occasion, off-type, knobby, or growth cracked tubers are produced. It is susceptible to Potato virus Y

(PVY) and shows severe rugose symptoms when infected with PVY. However, Red Norland is difficult to infect with PVY and PVY levels tend to stay low in Red Norland crops. Norland and its selections are susceptible to other common potato viruses, such as Potato virus X

Powdery scab, is a disease that happens to tubers. It is caused by the cercozoan Spongospora subterranea, is widespread in potato growing countries. Symptoms of powdery scab include small lesions in the early stages of the disease, progressing to raised pustules containing a powdery mass. Powdery...
