He spent a few years teaching science in Bennington, Vermont. He moved back to Cambridge and opened a do-it-yourself repair shop, named Hacker's Haven, with his brother. He and his wife, Monique, have two sons, Louie and Andrew.

He spends the bulk of his time running the garage and working on the pair's radio show.

Some, especially Ray, point out that the bulk of the correct diagnoses and advice distributed by Car Talk are in fact produced by Ray. He is also responsible for the "Weekly Puzzler".

Ray and his brother Tom had cameo appearances as the Rust-eze owners in the Pixar film, Cars
