During his career as a professional triathlete, he captured seven Ironman titles and won the 1993 Winter Triathlon World Championships. He was also well known for shattering the Ironman New Zealand bike and overall course records in 1989 while riding the first triathlon specific bicycle designed by Dan Empfield
