Darkthrone is a Norwegian black metal band. They formed in 1987 as a death metal band, but after embracing the black metal style in 1991, they became a driving force in the Norwegian black metal scene. For most of this period Darkthrone has consisted of just two musicians, Nocturno Culto and...

. It was released through Moonfog Productions in 1999.

This album marked a noticeable shift in the band's musical and lyrical scope. While still retaining much of the band's older black metal roots, the music itself is more slow-to-mid-paced with lesser blast beating drums than on previous albums, and the album's production is cleaner and clearer than previous albums; this has led to some criticism against the band by long-time fans. Nocturno Culto wrote the music for all the songs, except "The Beast", which was the sole musical contribution by Fenriz, who contributed lyrics instead. The album's lyrics also started to move away from the group's original topics, taking on more mysterious and avant-garde topics versus the Satanic/anti-religious themes of old.

In the album's booklet, Nocturno Culto is credited as "Nocturnal Cult". Also, all the Ts in the liner notes and lyrics are replaced with inverted crosses.
