Early life

Born on October 31, 1965 in Guwahati, Assam. She attended T.C Girls Higher secondary school and completed her education at Handique (Assamese: Xôndikoi) Girls' College. From a young age she excelled in athletics and sports such as Cricket, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Shot put and discus throwing in the national level, captaining the Assam Cricket team while still in school. She was awarded the best athletes awards two years running in Guwahati University. Though she was competitive in all sports, it was at Cricket where she shone the brightest. She played as an all-rounder for the team until retiring from playing Cricket in 1986.After marriage she adopted the Hindu surname Narah, but she did not changed her religion, nor she wears shindoor.

Political career

She entered politics in 1988 as a social worker and soon was thrust into the limelight leading various youth councils in the state. She joined the Indian Congress in 1995 and rose to the position of General Secretary, Vice President and President of the Assam Youth Congress. She contested the 12th Lok Sabha Elections in 1998 as a candidate of the Congress and won, being elected to the 12th Lok Sabha and was a re-election to the Parliament as a member of the 13th Lok Sabha later that year. She has been members of various groups and committees within the Congress.

Other

She is currently the President of the Women's Cricket Association of India and holds executive ranks in various Sports departments in India and Assam. She has also recently ventured into movie-making releasing her first movie, as a producer in 2008.
