Randall Hyde was educated at, and became a lecturer at, the University of California at Riverside. He earned a bachelors degree in Computer Science in 1982, and a Masters degree in Computer Science in 1987 - both from UC Riverside. His area of specialization is compilers and other system software, and he has written compilers, assemblers, operating systems and control software. He was a lecturer at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona
