. The metrics compare an automatically produced summary or translation against a reference or a set of references (human-produced) summary or translation.

Various forms of the metric are based on n-grams (ROUGE-N); least common substrings (ROUGE-L and ROUGE-W); and skip bigrams and unigrams (ROUGE-S and ROUGE-SU).
