resigned as president of the university, effective June 15, 2009 leaving the president position vacant. On June 16, 2009, The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents appointed Dr. Loftin as interim President of the Texas A&M System's flagship campus. On Friday February 12, 2010 Dr. Loftin was officially accepted to be the 24th president of Texas A&M University by a unanimous decision.
Prior to being appointed interim president, he served as the Vice President and CEO of Texas A&M University at Galveston

On campus, his trademark bowtie has become a symbol for the man himself.
