tree. Growth is shrub-like, with it commonly forming extensive cloned colonies. Leaves are alternate, simple, and entire or with irregular teeth or lobes. Lobes when present are usually spine tipped. Leaves are retained through the winter, dropping just before or as new growth resumes in late winter or early spring. It is native to the southeastern United States from Louisiana (possibly Texas) eastward to Florida and Northward along the coastal plain to Virginia .
