The park project started in 1997 and opened in 2009 and was designed by landscape architect Sidónio Pardal. The city park includes the "cidade desportiva" or the "sports city" project of Póvoa de Varzim.

History

The project for a city park in Póvoa de Varzim started early in the 20th century, and was planned for the area around Lagoa Beach

, but local real estate companies pressured for the urban development of the beach area. in 1997, a new project further inland started being planned. The new site, located in much larger area between the A28 freeway and Pedreira Lake, was located between the parishes Amorim

The Sports City project, the first phase, started in 2003 with the construction of the City Stadium

 and in 2009 with the opening of the surrounding Leisure Park (Parque de Lazer) with 19 hectare. The construction was slow and phased, mostly due to existence of 150 privately-owned lands.

Sports city

The Sports City of Póvoa de Varzim includes the City Statidum of Póvoa de Varzim, the surrounding fields, mostly used by the local junior people's soccer league of Póvoa de Varzim.

The Sports City will also include the Varzim S.C. stadium and the Sports Complex of Clube Desportivo da Póvoa.

East Park

The East Park or Leisure Park (Parque de Lazer) has 19 hectare with a 2 hectare central lake. The landscaped lake is surrounded by 3000 metres (9,842.5 ft) of ways and 20 stops. These stops are granite constructions used for resting, some shaped as small squares or amphitheaters and others for more intimate stays.

The East Park is located in the Sencadas area, in Amorim Parish, and includes a tunnel under the Avenida do Mar that serves as a pedestrian access for the inhabitants of Barreiros
